The mother of the missing Long Island woman, Gabby Petito, contacted her daughter’s boyfriend and her family last week in an attempt to locate her – but said she had received no response to her desperate texts , according to a report.
“I texted Brian’s mom to tell her I was trying to get in touch with Gabby. I also texted Brian. I got no response, ”Nicole Schmidt told the Daily Mail.
“I knew something was wrong. I felt something was wrong and I needed to report her missing immediately, ”added the distraught woman, who said she had contacted Brian Laundrie’s mother, Roberta.
Schmidt, who had not heard from Petito, 22, since August 25, told the outlet that police first blew her out when they reported her daughter missing on Friday after trying to ‘reach the laundries.
On Saturday, she filed a missing person report with Suffolk County Police on Long Island.
Schmidt and Petito’s father Joe Petito have both pleaded for his return, saying in a statement the family are “going through the worst times of their lives.”
“Brian refuses to tell Gabby’s family where he last saw her,” the statement read. Brian also refuses to explain why he left Gabby alone and drove his van to Florida. These are critical questions that require immediate answers.
Brian, who continues to evade cops, broke his silence, saying through his lawyer that he would “stand back” as the search, which has attracted national attention, continues to locate the woman. missing.
“The Schmidt and Petito family are begging the Laundrie family not to ‘stay in the background’ but to help find who Brian called the love of his life,” the parents’ statement added. “How does Brian stay in the background when he’s the only person who knows Gabby’s whereabouts.”
Laundrie and Petito, who lived together in Florida, took a trip from coast to coast in July and were due to complete the trip to a friend’s house in Portland around Halloween.
But Laundrie returned home to Florida in the 2012 Ford Transit van they were traveling in on Friday – without Petito. He has since hired a lawyer and refused to cooperate with the police – who were also turned away by Laundrie’s parents.
Schmidt told the outlet that Laundrie’s sister Cassie was the only member of her family who spoke to investigators.
“It’s a very mysterious situation. We don’t understand why he’s doing this. Everyone assumes the worst and thinks they’re guilty of it, but I don’t want to believe it. I want to believe that she just needs help and everyone has to keep looking, ”the mother told the newspaper.
Schmidt said Roberta Laundrie loved Petito “like a girl” and was “so excited” about the couple’s engagement.
Petito described her beau as her fiancé on social media, but Schmidt told the newspaper that her daughter and Laundrie decided to call off their engagement because they felt they were too young to be married.
“I think they kind of put this on hold just because they thought it was a little quick. They were excited at first, but then they were like, “Wait a minute, we’re very young. So they were really just boyfriend and girlfriend, ”Schmidt said.
“Maybe the relationship wasn’t what I thought,” she added.
