Gabby Agbonlahor did coaching badges with Ruben Amorim and believes he could be suited to Liverpool

Gabby Agbonlahor has given Liverpool fans an insight into Ruben Amorim’s work ethic after completing a coaching course together.

Sporting Lisbon boss Amorim has been linked with a move to the Reds this summer to replace the departing Jurgen Klopp.

The 39-year-old led Sporting to the Portuguese top flight title in 2021 and is on course to do so again this season as he sits top of the table.

Amorim’s success therefore made him a candidate for the soon-to-be vacant position at Liverpool, and Agbonlahor had first-hand experience of his commitment as manager.

Speaking to Darren Bent on talkSPORT Drive, the former Aston Villa star revealed he and Amorim were both on the same coaching course and suggested the Portuguese would have what it takes to become manager of Liverpool.

“Funnily enough, I did my coaching badges with Ruben, we did the fast track course, Northern Ireland, Belfast,” Agbonlahor said.

“He was someone who was like, he was there, buddy. Some people might have laughed a little bit and joked on the course and all that, he was there.

“By focusing in every meeting, on all the theoretical part, when you were doing the coaching job on the pitch, you could say he was there.

“I’m sure it was five years ago, he’s 39 now, so he’s a young manager but I don’t see why (he could become Liverpool manager), he’s doing a great job at Sporting, is not it ? “

Amorim is one of the main contenders for the Liverpool job. German national team boss Julian Nagelsmann is also a household name.

Xabi Alonso was the favorite since Klopp announced his departure, but the former Red has committed his future to Bayer Leverkusen.

Despite the links with such a prestigious job, Amorim recently said he felt “upset” by speculation over a move to Liverpool.

Whoever is next to take control, whether it’s Amorim, Nagelsmann or another option, they will have big shoes to fill at Anfield.

Klopp will leave the club after guiding it to success in all major competitions, including the Premier League and Champions League.

The German is considered a Reds legend and leaves a legacy that will be hard to beat as the club prepares for its next era.
