Like his predecessor, Fyre Festival 2 seems to have gone bumpy.
Earlier this week, Playa Del Carmen officials, Mexico, published a statement saying that the continuation of the unfortunate 2017 music festival had not been approved in the municipality.
On Friday, however, the festival organizers published their own statement which sought to refute this assertion.
“Fyre is working directly with the government of Playa del Carmen (PDC) and their civil servants since March 5, 2025 to ensure a safe and successful event,” wrote the organizers on the festival Instagram account. “All media reports suggesting that our team has not worked with the PDC government is simply inaccurate and based on disinformation.”
In their article, the organizers shared a series of screenshots documenting their correspondence with the city’s government officials concerning the supposed permits and payments.
In a screenshot, the festival organizers included an article which, according to him, was shared on the official Instagram account of the city government which included images of a virtual press conference that the founder of the Fyre Festival, Billy McFarland, organized on March 27.
“In the light of rumors on an event entitled” Fyre 2 “,” we will inform that no event with this name will be held in Playa del Carmen, “said local government in a translated declaration published on social networks on April 2.” After a responsible exam, there is no registration or planning in the municipality. “”
The city declaration contradicted McFarland, who announced during the press conference on March 27 that the event would be held in Playa del Carmen from May 30 to June 2.
During this same conference, Fernando Delgado, founder of Martina Beach Club, which is listed as one of the sites of the festival on social networks, said: “We already have permits, so it will be very successful and we are very happy to have the Fyre festival.”
The declaration of managers follows a similar rejection of the local government and the tourism council of Isla Mujeres, the original site proposed of the festival.
“Due to the information circulating in the media concerning the event” Fyre Festival II “, the Directorate General of Tourism of Isla Mujeres informs that no person or company has requested permits from this office or any other department of municipal government for the said event”, the local government office of Isla Mujeres shared in a Facebook post on February 26.
“We have no knowledge of this event, nor contact with a person or a business on this subject,” said Edgar Gasca, of the Tourism Department of Isla Mujeres, in The Guardian in a history published on February 27. “For us, this is an event that does not exist.”
Nick Lawson, organizer of the festival, told Yahoo Entertainment in a statement on March 27 that the organizers were “blind” by the disdainful allegations of the Directorate of Tourism Isla Mujeres.
“We finally found the perfect house for Fyre Festival 2 in Playa del Carmen,” said Lawson at the time. “Playa has the ideal combinations of beach clubs, hotels and experiences for our guests. We were welcomed with open arms and we could not ask for a better location partner.”
Yahoo Entertainment contacted both the Playa del Carmen City Council and the organizers of the Fyre Festival for more information, but did not immediately receive any answers.
The Fyre Festival 2, teasing by McFarland in August 2023, was initially announced to take place on Isla Mujeres.
In an Instagram post on March 21, McFarland confirmed the move to Playa del Carmen, writing that he would be held in place “in the heart of the Maya Riviera”, appointing new places and accommodation.
During the press conference on March 27, McFarland was optimistic that the event was going forward.
“I am not here to apologize,” he said at the start of the presentation, citing the “seven to eight years of maturation of the festival” of the festival. He also credited the team’s collaboration with Lostnights, the event company joining forces with the Fyre Festival, which he described as “one of the best festival companies not only in Mexico, but in the world”.
Raúl Tassinari González, Secretary of Security of Citizens of Playa Del Carmen, attended the McFarland press conference. González is listed as a municipal secretary for the security of citizens on the city’s official website in October 2024.
Yahoo Entertainment contacted city officials to find out if González was acting officially or on behalf of the government during the event but did not immediately receive an answer.
Tickets for Fyre 2 are still on sale, the price of which varies from $ 1,400 to more than $ 1.1 million.
During the press conference, McFarland and his team said that the new event would include 1,800 participants, 40 artists and luxury experiences, including private villas, drivers and yachts.
Manuel Reta, chief of artistic and commercial relations for Lostnights, said at the conference on March 27 that “the first release of artists would come next week”. As of April 4, no range of this type was published, and it was announced on social networks.
