Novak Djokovic became angry and told a rowdy spectator to “shut up” during his defeat to Casper Ruud in the Monte Carlo Masters semi-final.

The visibly angry world number 1 withdrew from the tournament after a 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 loss to 10th-ranked Ruud on Saturday night as his struggles in 2024 continued.

It was Ruud’s first victory against the 24-time Grand Slam title winner in his six attempts – with Djokovic losing in the deciding set and expressing his frustration.

Djokovic was filmed turning to a spectator and shouting a series of expletives, apparently furious at the noise emanating from the stands.

After missing a simple forehand while down 3-4, Djokovic, on the cusp of another backhand, took a turn before fixing his attention on the rowdy individual.

“Would you please shut up?” » » he shouted before muttering under his breath.

A video on YouTube apparently showed the spectator being kicked out of the room.

Djokovic struggled early in the match and lost two of his first three service games, with Ruud winning the first set decisively.

The 36-year-old, however, responded in style and won the second set to win the showdown the distance and set up what proved to be a nail-biting deciding set.

But Djokovic double-faulted on Ruud’s match point to condemn himself to defeat.

After shouting, Djokovic was also filmed muttering expletives under his breath.

Djokovic is seeking his first title this year and admitted he is not having a ‘good season’

“There are definitely positives to take away, but I’m used to a very high level in terms of expectations and results,” he admitted.

“Not having a title is – compared to the last 15 years – not a good season at all.”

Djokovic’s elimination follows his third-round knockout at Indian Wells and a semifinal loss at the Australian Open. He is still looking for his first title of the year.

“I had semi-finals in Australia, semi-finals here,” he added. “It’s normal to expect that you will have seasons where you don’t start well – this is the one.

“I hope I can resume. In terms of results, I can build from there.
