Frozen Empire has (finally) hit a major box office milestone

Although director Ivan Reitman’s original 1984 classic “Ghostbusters” ($295 million worldwide) remains one of the most beloved mainstream comedy hits in history, that film was more of an exception than a rule, at least as far as the rest of the franchise is concerned. . Almost all other entries have exceeded $200 million worldwide, without accounting for inflation. “Ghostbusters II” ($215 million), 2016’s female-led “Ghostbusters: Answer the Call” reboot ($229 million) and 2021’s “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” ($203 million) were all in the same fork. The audience is certainly loyal, but also somewhat limited.

Sony made a slight miscalculation after the moderate success of “Afterlife” in 2021. That film, directed by Jason Reitman, only had a budget of $75 million. Due to the other revenue streams coming from a “Ghostbusters” movie, that was enough to greenlight the sequel. Unfortunately, director Gil Kenan’s sequel was a bit more expensive, and with almost the same turnout, which doomed him to lose money on its theatrical run (not to mention the fact that critics didn’t like it). very good). ). But over a long enough timeline, the studio will probably find a way to get out of the red.

Looking to the future, it’s extremely unlikely that this iteration of the franchise will continue. We have a new “Ghostbusters” animated series in the works at Netflix, and right now it seems like a better path for the franchise’s future, at least for now.

“Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” is now in theaters and on VOD.
