Manu Bhaker became the first Indian woman shooter to win an Olympic medal by clinching bronze in the 10m air pistol event on Sunday (July 28). The triumph opened the country’s tally at the Paris Olympics and ended a 12-year wait for the much-anticipated shooters.

India’s last shooting medal came at London 2012 when rapid fire pistol shooter Vijay Kumar and 10m air rifle shooter Gagan Narang won silver and bronze respectively.

Bhaker, 22, from Jhajjar in Haryana, fought hard to secure the bronze medal with a score of 221.7.

Korea’s Kim Yeji won silver with a total of 241.3 while her compatriot Jin Ye Oh took gold with a Games record 243.2.

Bhaker was competing in her second Olympics after being blanked in the previous edition. In Tokyo, she suffered a malfunction in her pistol and left the venue in tears. Her tears turned to jubilation in Paris on Sunday.
