From Caroline Wozniacki to Erica Stoll
Rory McIlroy stunned the golf community in May 2024 when he filed for divorce from wife Erica Stoll after seven years of marriage.
The Northern Irishman filed the documents in Florida, with the filing saying the union was “irretrievably broken.” The couple also has a marriage contract.
McIlroy’s camp confirmed that a divorce had been filed and the statement from the PGA Tour star’s camp “underscored Rory’s desire to ensure that this difficult time is as respectful and amicable as possible.”
It is unclear what exactly led to the breakdown of their marriage.
Here’s a look back at McIlroy’s relationship history:
2014 – First affair after the breakup of Caroline Wozniacki
McIlory first became romantically involved with Stoll, a New York native, in 2014 after he and Danish tennis professional Caroline Wozniacki called off their engagement in May.
McIlroy said in a statement at the time: “The problem is mine. The wedding invitations that went out this weekend made me realize that I wasn’t ready for everything that marriage entails.
In May 2015, McIlroy said he and Stoll had been dating for more than six months when he discussed their romance with The Times of London.
“I’m very happy in my love life,” he said. “We didn’t really put it out there. She’s from America, which is why I love spending time in Palm Beach… The last six or seven months have been really nice. This part of my life is going very well.
McIlroy and Stoll first met while she was working the Ryder Cup for the PGA on the transport team in 2012 – while he was still dating Wozniacki – and they have remained friends ever since.
McIlroy almost missed his tee time because he overslept and Stoll drove him to the course with the help of a police escort, he told The Golf Channel.
2017 – Married in a star-studded ceremony
McIlroy and Stoll tied the knot in a fairytale ceremony held at Ashford Castle in Ireland in April 2017.
Singers Stevie Wonder, Niall Horan of One Direction, Ed Sheeran, actor Jamie Dornan and Chris Martin of Coldplay were in attendance at the event, according to E! News. Wonder and Sheeran also performed, according to reports.
McIlroy proposed to the then-publicist while the couple was in Paris in December 2015.
Stoll supported McIlroy at the Ryder Cup in 2016 (Minnesota), 2018 (Paris), 2021 (Wisconsin) and 2023 (Rome).
2020 – Welcome baby
McIlroy and Stoll welcomed their daughter Poppy in August 2020.
The four-time major winner confirmed the couple were expecting a baby girl at the BMW Championship that summer.
“We’re about to be parents very soon, so we’re obviously super excited. Yes, we obviously shared the news with our friends and family, but I didn’t think it was something I really needed to share here,” McIlroy said at the time. “It’s a private matter, but we’re really excited and can’t wait for her to get here.
The couple has not officially announced that they are expecting.
Poppy served as her father’s caddy in the Masters’ Par 3 competition in 2023.
McIlroy’s May 2024 divorce filing also requested joint custody of his and Stoll’s daughter.
2023 – Masters/Ryder Cup appearances
McIlroy and Stoll packed their PDA at the Masters in 2023, as seen in photos of the couple kissing on the course at Augusta National.
They were all smiles as they held hands on the streets of Rome ahead of the Ryder Cup in September 2023.
At the time, they arrived at the Spanish Steps to take photos with the other couples.
Stoll was noticeably absent from the Masters in April 2024, as reported by the Irish Independent.
