Biden usually only meets with visiting heads of state and is not expected to sit down with Cameron. But Blinken plans to host Cameron for a private dinner at his residence Tuesday evening, according to a State Department official.
NATO appeal
Despite his previous tensions, Cameron – a former British prime minister – said he had a “good” meeting with Trump and that “whoever I talk to, I tend to make the same points” .
“We must do everything we can this year to ensure that NATO is in the strongest possible shape on its 75th anniversary, enabling everyone to reach 2% (of GDP for defense spending ),” said the British Foreign Secretary.
Trump sparked widespread concern in European capitals in February when he suggested he would “encourage” Russia to “do whatever it wants” to NATO countries that are failing to meet their financial obligations to the alliance. He has since attempted to soften his rhetoric – but not before senior officials, including Cameron, criticized him for his comments.
According to a statement from Trump’s team, Cameron and the former president discussed “the upcoming US and UK elections, policy issues specific to Brexit, the need for NATO countries to meet their needs in defense spending and put an end to the killings in Ukraine.
Trump’s campaign statement added that they also discussed “their mutual admiration for the late Queen Elizabeth II.”
