Two people close to Bayrou, who obtained anonymity to discuss a sensitive issue, described the Prime Minister as being in a state of “intense emotion” and “shock” after learning the incident. Pearl, now 53 years old, did not speak to his father abuses that shortly before the publication of the history of the Paris match, according to one of them.
The revelation of pearls has before the release of a book this Thursday on the violence that took place in Betharram. The book was written by Alain Esquerre, himself a former student and victim of mistreatment, who created a group of victims who led to 200 accusations. Pelant also shares his experience in the book.
Incidents of violence in Betharram were made public for the first time in 1996, when the father of a student brought accusations after his son was touched and subject to degrading sanctions in school. Bayrou was Minister of Education at the time and one of his sons was in the victim’s class.
In February, the point of sale in French investigation Mediunpart published witness declarations and documents which claimed to show that Bayrou “could not have been aware of the accusations”.
The French Prime Minister quickly denied allegations and said that he had “never been informed of incidents of violence, not to mention sexual violence”. He said he would continue Mediatart for defamation, although he is not clear if a prosecution has been filed.
Bayrou later said that, although he knew nothing about incidents of sexual violence, he was informed of the charges brought in 1996.
