Four people died and hundreds were injured, French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said.
This unprecedented measure for France comes on the same day that the NGO Access Now warned of a record number of Internet shutdowns around the world in its annual report for 2023.
French President Emmanuel Macron in July 2023 floated the idea of shutting down platforms like Snapchat and TikTok to control riots across mainland France following the murder of a teenager by a police officer. The idea has drawn widespread criticism, however, because it echoes steps taken by authoritarian regimes in China, Myanmar and Iran to stifle free speech.
TikTok did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
