Frank Lampard ‘proud of players and fans’ after Everton’s ‘special’ win over Man United but insists they won’t get carried away

Frank Lampard said he was “proud of the players and the fans” after his Everton side beat Manchester United 1-0 at Goodison Park to massively boost their chances of survival.

A first-half deflected strike from academy graduate Anthony Gordon decided the game, helping Lampard’s side recover from a depressing midweek loss to Burnley.

Leaving Lampard delighted with both players and fans

The 3-2 loss at Turf Moor last time out sucked Everton straight into the middle of a relegation battle, but they have since responded by clearing four points from the bottom three with one game more played.

Lampard’s record at Everton is still not very clear since arriving in January with three wins and seven losses in 10 league appearances, but home form has been a comfort.

The Chelsea legend now has three wins from five league games at Goodison Park, and he was keen to acknowledge the crowd’s role in an important home win.

Asked by talkSPORT what the result meant, Lampard said: “Three points, we need more so we won’t get carried away, but we’ve been good here at Goodison.

“My time here, we have five wins in seven games [in all competitions]we don’t give in, we fight, the crowd joins us and we create something a bit special like today.

“We just have to start over with that, the next game is at home and we haven’t chained the league wins yet so I’m really happy with how the whole stadium was, it was another special but we have I have more to do, I’m not jumping on the spot because there’s a lot more to do.

Everton looked to be in huge trouble after losing to Burnley

Lampard felt his side were judged harshly after a chaotic loss to Burnley, where they found themselves 2-1 before being knocked out.

But a visibly delighted Everton boss was delighted with his side’s recovery and ability to shrug off what could have been a catastrophic loss.

“We didn’t deserve to lose to Burnley,” he explained. “The most important thing today was the character of picking ourselves up.

“Thursday morning is horrible, Friday morning not so bad, Saturday morning you go again against Man United, that’s why I’m proud of the players and the fans.

The Chelsea legend was delighted with what he saw at Goodison

“We were all very optimistic, we fought until the last minute, and the minute is a bit of a difference.

“We have to deal with things on the outside, but at the moment the basics of football are much more important than pretty patterns, it’s the fighting, the tackling and the running that are going to keep us fit.

“We are not soft. While we bemoan the late game stakes at Burnley, when you’re in this position here with a top side like Manchester United, they only have to get the ball through your midfield once. and you have people love [Cristiano] Ronaldo and [Bruno] Fernandes running to your back four, you have to manage the game.

“As I said, we are now in a moment where this side of the game is more important than the beautiful side so well managed by the guys.

Lampard praised Pickford who helped keep United at bay

United beat Everton 12-7 during the match, with four efforts against three on target, and Lampard was delighted with Jordan Pickford’s ability to fend off any potential threats.

Asked about Pickford’s impact, Lampard said: “Tall, tall, he’s England’s number one.

“Jordan is a pleasure to work with, I must say, and the scrutiny that comes with being England’s number one is great.

“The saves he makes, I don’t think they’re amazing chances the first two but they’re really good saves and Ronaldo’s, with our luck recently, you expect the net to swell.

“You have to rely on your goalkeeper, top goalkeepers are a big deal, they earn you points and earn you points and Jordan did that today.”
