Four years from the military coup in Myanmar: joint declaration by Australia, Canada, the European Union, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the UNITED STATES

Start the text:

Today, the brands four years since the military regime of Myanmar have overturned the government democratically elected in Myanmar, creating one of the largest crises of Indo-Pacific. Since the coup d’etat, the people of Myanmar remains subject to a military regime which has deprived many of their rights, democratic aspirations and, for thousands, their freedom and their life.

We condemn in the strongest terms of the escalation of the violence of the military regime of Myanmar harming civilians, including human rights violations, sexual and sexual violence, as well as systematic persecution and discrimination against all religious and ethnic minorities. Army air strikes kill civilians, destroying schools, markets, places of worship and medical facilities; With an increase of almost 25 times since 2021, this represents on average three air strikes per day. The increase in air strikes in areas without active conflict marked a clear climbing of the army.

We call on the Myanmar military regime to immediately defuse violence, to guarantee humanitarian access without hindrance and safe across the country, and we urge all parties to prioritize civilians and to fully adhere to international humanitarian and law law International Human Rights.

In 2025, humanitarian needs have increased by twenty times since the coup. More than a third of the population, 19.9 million people, now need humanitarian assistance to meet their basic needs. It is estimated that 15.2 million people need food assistance and avoidable diseases are increasing.

The growing needs and current conflicts have moved up to 3.5 million people internally – an increase of almost one million from last year. Much more people are forced to flee through the borders of Myanmar. The increase in transnational crime, including the production and trafficking of narcotics, scam centers and the trafficking of human beings, harm the inhabitants of Myanmar and affect neighboring countries, risking instability in the wider region.

The current trajectory is not durable for Myanmar or the region. It is now time for the military regime of Myanmar to immediately change the course. We strongly urge the Myanmar military regime to stop ceasing violence, including harming civilians and civil infrastructure, to release all political prisoners and to initiate an authentic and inclusive dialogue with all stakeholders. These are essential first steps towards any peaceful democratic transition, reflecting the will of the people of Myanmar.

We reiterate our support for the central role of the Association of Nations of Southeast Asia (ASEAN) and the five-point consensus, including the special envoy of the president of ASEAN, by addressing myanmar and to the resulting refugee crisis. We strongly welcome the collaboration between the special envoys of the Anase and the United Nations (UN). We call on the international community to continue to support the implementation of the United Nations Security Council resolution 2669 (2022). We underline the need for responsibility for all the atrocities committed in Myanmar, human rights must be safeguarded, violations and abuses must be prevented.

We will continue to stay in solidarity with the inhabitants of Myanmar and to support their vision of an inclusive, peaceful and prosperous future.
