Four killed in strike in central Kyiv, officials say

Four people were killed in a Russian airstrike on kyiv overnight, according to local officials.

A previous air raid had just ended when another was launched at 6 a.m. local time (0400 GMT), with authorities warning of a ballistic missile threat and calling on residents to take shelter.

Windows were broken in the central Shevchenkivskyi district, including at a metro station, and a fire broke out in a non-residential building, the city’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, said. We do not know exactly what was targeted.

Videos posted online showed a car on fire and water rushing down a flooded street.

Air defenses were operational around the Ukrainian capital, Klitschko added.

This is the second deadly attack on kyiv this month. following a strike in the city on New Year’s Day that left two people dead.

Meanwhile, in the southern city of Zaporizhzhia, local authorities say six people were injured in a Russian strike on Saturday. A woman is said to be in serious condition.

The strikes are the latest in the war that began after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

They follow several Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory earlier this week.

On Tuesday, ammunition depots and chemical plants were hit in several regions of Russia, some of which were hundreds of kilometers from the border, according to the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Sources in Ukraine’s SBU intelligence service told the BBC that Tuesday’s attack was a “painful blow” to Russia’s ability to wage war.

At the time, Russia said it had shot down long-range US-supplied Atacms missiles as well as UK-made Storm Shadow cruise missiles, and vowed to respond to the attack.
