Four children injured in suspected drunk-driving collision in Cupertino

CUPERTINO – Four young children were injured – two of them seriously – in a suspected drunken driving collision over the weekend in Cupertino, authorities said.

The crash happened around 6:15 p.m. Saturday near Foothill and Stevens Creek boulevards, Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Brooks Jarosz said in a news release.

The driver of a silver Mazda pickup truck collided with another vehicle and hit a utility pole, Jarosz said. Four children – aged 11, 8, 7 and 4 – who were on the sidewalk at the time were also struck.

“Several 911 calls described a horrific scene that could have been avoided,” Jarosz said in the press release.

Two of the children were seriously injured, Jarosz said. Emergency medical personnel took life-saving measures and all four were transported to area hospitals.

One child remained in critical condition Monday.

The driver of the Mazda – identified as a 38-year-old Cupertino man – was arrested and booked into the county jail on charges of driving under the influence of drugs causing serious bodily injury, Jarosz said.

The sheriff’s traffic accident reconstruction specialist team is investigating the collision.
