WARNING: This story includes details of alleged sexual abuse.

Craig Monroe, 47, a sportscaster and former member of the Detroit Tigers, has been taken off the air indefinitely after being accused of sexually abusing a woman when she was a minor.

FOX 2 confirmed with sources familiar with the situation that Monroe was removed from the broadcast schedule hours after a 35-year-old woman made the allegations on social media last month.

Monroe, in a statement through his attorney, said he categorically denies the allegations.

The woman, who also reported the alleged abuse to police, claims Monroe sexually abused her for years – starting when she was 12, when he was in his 20s.

FOX 2 spoke at length with the accuser by phone. She asked to remain anonymous.

The accuser’s family was Monroe’s foster family when he played on a minor league baseball team in Charlotte County, Florida, in the early 2000s, she said. It all started when Monroe came into her room to fondle her, and it escalated from there, eventually leading to sexual intercourse when she was 15.

Once she turned 18, the woman and Monroe had a consensual and ongoing sexual relationship, she said. However, he “prostituted” her to his friends and acquaintances.

Florida police are actively investigating the alleged crimes, according to the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office. Anyone with information is asked to come forward.

The Detroit Tigers and Bally Sports responded to the allegations in a joint statement.

“Bally Sports Detroit and the Tigers are aware of the allegations on social media and take them seriously. As previously stated, Mr. Monroe has not been on the air and will continue to do so indefinitely,” the statement said. “We will have no further comment and any questions should be directed to Mr. Monroe.”

Detroit Tigers left fielder Craig Monroe leaves the field dejected after the last out of their game against the Chicago White Sox on August 13, 2006 at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago, Illinois. The Tigers were defeated by the White Sox 7-3 and were defeated by the White Sox.

Monroe played with the Tigers for more than five seasons, including their World Series run in 2006. He has been with the Tigers as a broadcaster since 2012.

The accuser said she wanted the public to know that she waited until last month to come forward out of fear for her safety and that of her family, knowing that her allegations could attract a lot of attention.

FOX 2 Detroit reached out to Monroe several times for comment. He did not respond.
