Former NFL star slams Colts’ Carson Wentz after loss to Jaguars: ‘I hate to say it’

Former NFL wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. didn’t rate Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz very highly on Friday after the Colts’ upset loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Smith, an NFL Network analyst, appeared on the “Pat McAfee Show” and wondered if Wentz was the right guy for the Colts. He noted how Indianapolis has become dependent on running back Jonathan Taylor despite the team trade for Wentz, who owes an estimated $15.4 million in 2021 and another $22 million in 2022.

Smith noted that a linebacker who can’t tackle or a cornerback who can’t cover wouldn’t be able to stay on the team he’s on. The former wide receiver compared Wentz to a financial investor who made bad trades on the stock market.

“You’ve bet the farm and traded for him, and you’re telling me we can win a game if we minimize throwing the ball. So I’m not into football anymore, but I’ll use an analogy that we all understand” , he told McAfee and co-host AJ Hawk.

“If you buy a stock and it continues to fall, there’s an unrealized and realized gain, but at some point you’ll have to press that trigger to sell or you’ll just drop out and tell your wife, “Oh, you know, I wasted our money, but, hey, our financier is a good guy. He can’t choose fucking actions. He just screwed up our kid’s college fund. He screwed up all our money but man, you know he’s a good guy. He has a good handshake. He looks you in the eyes.

“It’s Carson Wentz. I hate to say it. Carson Wentz is exactly the person I would like my daughter to date BUT play football…NO.”

The Colts needed a win to qualify for the playoffs, but lost to the Jaguars, the NFL’s worst team of 2021.
