John Vella, an offensive line who started for the Oakland Raiders when they won Super Bowl XI, died at the age of 74.
“The Raiders family cries the death of John Vella, a star on the dominant attacking lines of Raider from the 1970s and a starter in the Oakland Super Bowl XI championship team,” the raiders said in a statement. “The prayers of the whole Raider nation are with the Vella family at that time.”
Vella was a choice of second round of the raiders in 1972 after an American senior season at the USC. He played both a guard and a tackle for the raiders for eight seasons, then played a ninth and last season with the Vikings.
