What is one thing you don’t want to happen at your first press conference as manager of a new club?

A group of masked ultras storming the room and confronting you and the club president is probably right up there.

The former Liverpool man was eager to start and tweeted it after the press conference

Well, that’s exactly what happened to former Liverpool and Manchester City midfielder Albert Riera after he was appointed manager of Slovenian club Olimpija Ljubljana.

The Spaniard, who has made 55 Premier League appearances, recently left his position as Galatasaray assistant boss to take on his first managerial role.

And Riera was challenged by some of the club’s supporters as he spoke to the media, the group of individuals believed to have a problem with the sacking of former manager Robert Prosinecki.

That’s according to COPE’s El Partidazo, who add that the former Croatia international was sent off after just three months at the club due to a dispute with the board.

The situation with Riera, 40, escalated and he eventually walked out amid rising tensions, which is not an ideal start to life at the helm of the club.

He took his first training session on Monday and his first match will be on Thursday, when Olimpija face Luxembourg side Differdange 03 in a Europa Conference League qualifying round.

Riera moved to Liverpool in an £8m move from Espanyol in 2008, scoring five times for the club.

He had spent time on loan at Man City two years prior, as well as eight times for Watford in 2018.
