Monster and Career Builder, former giants of online work hunting, merged in September, but that did not revive their fortune. The entity combined Careerbuilder + Monster filed a request for protection against the bankruptcy of Chapter 11, Cnn Reports. The company announced Tuesday that it would sell major segments of its activities thanks to a process supervised by the court. Monster Government Services, which develops software for state and federal agencies, will go to Valsoft Corp., a Canadian company. All transactions are awaiting approval from the court and could be replaced by higher offers. Jeff Furman, CEO of the combined entity, said that the company “made difficult and necessary decisions to reduce costs and help ensure a transparent transition from our businesses”.

Monster and Careerbuilder were dominant players in the late 1990s and early 2000s, with marketing efforts such as Super Bowl advertisements. Their influence has faded in recent years when job seekers clashed with new competitors as indeed, Glassdoor and Linkedin. Some workers from Careerbuilder + Monster could discover these sites this week – Furman said that the company was trying to preserve jobs, but that there will be layoffs.
