Gareth Southgate has been asked to throw Jack Grealish, Phil Foden and Mason Mount together for England at Euro 2020.
Foden and Mount appear to be guaranteed starters under the guidance of the boss of the Three Lions, whose team’s tournament kicks off against Croatia on Sunday, LIVE on talkSPORT from 2pm.
Despite his recent performances in England’s friendly victories over Austria and Romania, Grealish faces competition from Marcus Rashford and Raheem Sterling for a starting place on the left wing.
But former West Ham and England striker Tony Cottee wants Southgate to play just one midfielder at Declan Rice to allow Grealish to line up alongside Foden and Mount.
Cottee, who has won seven caps for England, told talkSPORT: “I like Jordan Henderson as a player, but he’s not in good shape.
“You have to play Declan Rice as a midfielder and then you are going to choose all the talents to play in front of him.
“If it was me as a manager I would have Harry Kane up front and then the three players playing on my team before I even think of anything else would be Grealish, Foden and Mount.
“I would have these three creative players and then you pick the rest of the team around her… whether it’s Rashford or Sterling.
“I think we all know what we’d be playing foursome against if everyone’s in good shape, we know who the goalie is. This is my message to Gareth – not that he listens to me and not that he cares what I think!
“But please, a starting midfielder and play the talented players because when you get into the last stages you need a Gazza [Paul Gascoigne] or a Glenn Hoddle or a Peter Beardsley.
“With this current squad we have three outstanding talents – Grealish, Foden, Mount – playing them and they can open defenses and shake things up.”
