Former England prodigy RELEASED by Australian club as grim reality hits former Premier League star

  • This could mean the end of his stay in Australia

Former England international Jack Rodwell has left Sydney FC, likely ending his career in the Men’s A-League competition.

After two seasons with the Sky Blues, Rodwell headlined five departures announced on Wednesday night, with Robert Mak, Fabio Gomes, Gabriel Lacerda and Adam Pavlesic also departing.

The Sky Blues have 23 players signed for next season under Ufuk Talay, who took charge last November after replacing Steve Corica.

Rodwell’s season ended prematurely after he was sent off and received a two-match suspension for a poor tackle in Sydney’s first semi-final against Central Coast.

The 33-year-old three-time England defender joined Sydney two years ago after a one-season stint with Western Sydney Wanderers.

But while his class, composure and experience shone through, Rodwell’s body failed him as he managed just 22 ALM appearances across two campaigns in Sydney.

Slovakian Mak has completed his two-year contract and was recently linked with a return to his homeland with Slovan Bratislava.

The 33-year-old winger has scored 20 goals in two seasons.

Gomes, 26, has scored 11 goals this season but returns to Brazilian Serie A parent club Atletico Minero once his loan spell ends.

Gabriel joins Brazilian Serie B side Ceara Sporting Club after his loan expired.

The young goalkeeper Pavlesic, 21, left after the end of his contract.

“I would like to thank each of the departing players for their service to Sydney FC,” Corica said.

“Everyone has made a positive contribution to this club and I wish them the best for the future and their careers.”
