Details are emerging regarding the shocking death of former Buccaneers running back Doug Martin, with the East Bay Times reporting that his death occurred while he was in police custody.
Martin died Saturday morning at the age of 36 after police responded to a home invasion at 4:15 a.m. ET in Oakland, California, allegedly involving Martin.
Martin reportedly previously had a “medical emergency” and then a “brief struggle” ensued.
The former Buccaneers and Raiders star reportedly resisted arrest when police attempted to arrest him, became unresponsive and was taken to a hospital, where he later died, according to local Oakland Fox affiliate.
Police did not say why they detained Martin and it was unclear what the “medical emergency” was.
After he became unconscious, paramedics arrived and he was taken to hospital.
“It is with great sadness to inform you that Doug Martin passed away Saturday morning,” the family said in a statement. “The cause of death is currently unconfirmed.”
Martin’s cause of death remains under investigation by multiple law enforcement agencies.
The officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave, per protocol.
Martin was selected No. 31 overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2012 NFL Draft and rushed for 5,356 yards during his seven-year career.
Martin played six of his seven seasons in Tampa before finishing his career with the Raiders, who then played in his hometown of Oakland.
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of Doug Martin,” the Buccaneers said in a statement. “From his record-breaking rookie season in 2012 to his multiple Pro Bowl selections during his six seasons as a Buccaneer, Doug has made a lasting impact on our franchise.”
