Former Boston Woman Was Supposed To Report For Prison Sentence, But She Went To The Beach

Crime

Authorities say Yris Sanchez posted about his beach and pool escapades on Facebook after failing to report to jail.

A former Boston woman was sentenced Thursday to six months in prison for failing to serve an earlier sentence, instead enjoying beaches, pools and parties in the Dominican Republic, the acting U.S. Attorney’s Office announced. Massachusetts, Joshua S. Levy.

In 2020, Yris Sanchez, 55, was sentenced to 15 months in prison for passport abuse, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she was granted a request for bail, with the agreement that she would later report to serve her sentence, officials said.

After several extensions, Sánchez was scheduled to turn himself in in June 2021, but never showed up, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Instead, prosecutors say Sanchez resided in the Dominican Republic for 20 months after his surrender deadline. While living there, she “posted various daily activities on Facebook, including trips to the beach, pool and social functions,” Levy’s office said.

In December 2023, Sanchez pleaded guilty to failing to appear to serve a federal sentence.

The six-month sentence handed down Thursday will run concurrently with Sanchez’s 15-month sentence for passport abuse. Levy’s office said she would be deported once she served her sentence.
