Former Boston Red Sox player and 2004 World Series winner Dave McCarty has died at the age of 54.

According to the team, McCarty suffered a “cardiac event” in Oakland, California.

“Our hearts are heavy with the passing of Dave McCarty,” the team said in a statement.

“Playing 3 seasons with the Red Sox, he will always be part of the team that broke the curse for the 2004 World Series championship.”

“We send our love to his wife, Monica, and their children, Reid and Maxine.”

Former Red Sox player and 2004 World Series winner Dave McCarty has died at the age of 54.

The former first baseman and outfielder spent the final three seasons of his 11-year Major League Baseball career with the Red Sox.

McCarty has played in 630 MLB games with seven teams and was at the Red Sox’s Fenway Park earlier this month to pay tribute to the team that won the World Series in 2004.
