COLOGNE, Germany (WKRC) — Ford Motor Company announced Wednesday the return of a Mustang stablemate.
Ford says its “cult classic” Capri will return to the assembly line as an all-electric SUV designed for the European market.
Originally an iconic two-door coupe, the new Ford Capri has been reimagined as a mid-size electric crossover built on a Volkswagen platform alongside the Explorer EV.
Designed to be the European Mustang, production of the Ford Capri began in 1968 under the Ford of Britain umbrella, eventually ending in December 1986.
Due to the Capri’s success, Ford introduced the model in the United States in 1970 under the Lincoln-Mercury division, where it was initially presented simply as the “Capri”.
The first-generation Capri sold for around $2,300 at the time, with production of the captive import for the U.S. market ending in 1977.
Officially introduced to Ford’s Mercury lineup in 1979, the second-generation Mercury Capri would be designed as a counterpart to the Mustang until production ceased in 1986, later returning as a roadster in 1991 until the third-generation ended production in 1994.
According to Car and Driver, the electric Capri will be offered in two “Extended Range” models, with the base version producing 282 horsepower and a claimed range of 380 miles. The Capri can charge from 10 to 80 percent in 28 minutes, according to the site.
The premium Capri model adds a second motor, making it all-wheel drive, and produces up to 335 horsepower, with a claimed range of 368 miles, according to Car and Driver, which noted that the premium can charge from ten to 80 percent in about 26 minutes.
There are currently no plans to bring the Capri to the United States, according to Car and Driver.
