Season 1 of Impassive faceRian Johnson, the dramatic of eclectic crime with Natasha Lyonne as a woman who can always say when someone is lying, was one of the first really fantastic series of Peacock. Each Colon-Plip has turned a unique story of murder, mystery and people realizing how different their understanding of truth can be. But when I spoke with Johnson recently, he told me that he was never completely interested in playing with the extent of Impassive facenarrative. For him, the joy of making the story of Charlie Cale has always been rooted to find out how to create new and emotionally motivated ties between her and the strange people she meets. And as the original formula has worked so well, Johnson estimated that sticking to season 2 would be his best bet.

I listened to one of your interviews where you explained how, with season 2, you did not really think of taking the show in a new direction, but rather to stick to the classic formula and to draw new things from it. What kind of things seemed “fresh” to you when you planned these new episodes?
This program is so a tribute to the type of television that I grew up watching. Colonis the evidence, but Quantum jump is another that we really inspire a lot. For me, the freshness every week comes from the world in which Charlie is and the little microcosmic world that you end up exploring in this specific episode.
This is the quantum leap factor, I think. But Charlie’s relationships with the people she meets are also important. Because Charlie is not a cop and it is not her job to investigate these things, one of the challenges and fun things about the writing of the show is to find a way for her every week. It must be emotional, and it must be a thing based on the relationships that pushes her to solve the mystery.
Were there things you wanted to do differently this season?
Really, with each episode, as much as each parameter must be different, we also try to find new ways for Charlie in a way she can bounce against new characters and train new dynamics with them.
I’m really, really proud of the release of “Sloppy Joseph”, the episode of the primary school. It was a really, really special experience being worked with Cynthia – to see her bring her talent to the table, but also her feeling of calm. She had to hold all these characters in her head, and we turned for 10 days in a very low way where we would leave the installed camera, she would make half of the conversation, would make a change of costume of 45 minutes, return and make the other half. See someone with this type of talent work at this level and keep them together in such a cool way has been a real highlight.
