For Palestinian Americans from Dearborn, Michigan, like Zaynah Jadallah and his family, the trip and loss have become central elements of his family heritage.
The members of his family were teachers in Al-Bireh in what is now the occupied West Bank during the 1948 Nakba, when hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were forced from their homes and their land by Zionist paramilitaries, Then the Israeli army, in the war surrounding Israel of Israel Creation.
“They fled the attacks in two cars for Jordan. One of the cars did it, the other was bombed and they were burned alive, “she said.
“None of them survived.”
Thus, when Donald Trump, standing alongside Benjamin Netanyahu, suggested last week that the Palestinians in the devastated band of Gaza leave their houses and that he was transformed into a “riviera” for “the people of the world”, the Comments on which he followed, he has since doubled, Jadallah was livid.
“The President of the United States calling for ethnic cleaning and the continuous genocide of the Palestinians,” she says.
“It’s scandalous.”
For many American Palestinian residents of Dearborn like Jadallah, the answers to the proposals of the American president follow a similar line: distrust, anger, but not much surprise.
“He has a story of being faithful to the Zionist movement of genocide and colonization (of) Palestinian people,” she says.
“It was not surprising, but it was scandalous.”
A photo on the coverage before the February 1 edition of February 1 of February 1 of Dearborn, thousands of Palestinians walking along a seafront to their houses destroyed in northern Gaza. The legend reads as follows: “The Great Return Marche”.
“The story of Gaza is that of pain and pride,” reads the main article of the newspaper on the subject.
He continues: “He dates back to ancient civilizations and includes great resistance against the invasion, like the three -month seat by Alexander the Great and his Macedonian army in 332 BCE.”
Trump’s announcement has turned upset decades of international consensus and has threatened fragile for fragile discussions to extend a delicate ceasefire in Gaza. Glee was met with a large part of the Israeli Prime Minister and other far -right elements in Israel.
More than half of the 110,000 inhabitants of Dearborn are Arab heritage, holding one of the largest Arab communities outside the Middle East. Many American Palestinian residents lost family members during the Israel assault on the Gaza Strip, which killed more than 46,000 people.
“No one is really shocked. Everyone is disgusted, ”explains Amer Zahr, an American Palestinian actor and activist whose family was moved by Nazareth, Jaffa and Akka (Acre) during the Nakba.
“I am really angry with the idea that we are talking about the thing that Trump said Tuesday as if it was new or new or unique. This is not the case, ”he says.
“It is Israel’s policy to ethnically clean the Palestinians, and this policy has been fully supported and funded by the United States.”
He also notes that it is only when Trump makes comments that the Liberals and the Democratic Party “finally reject the notion of ethnic cleaning of the Palestinians”.
“I guess he has a different ring when Trump says.”
Trump won more votes in the November presidential election in Dearborn than the candidate of the Kamala Harris party or the candidate of the Green Party of the Democratic Party, the first time that a candidate of the Republican Party won the city in 24 years .
While Harris refused to campaign in Dearborn, Trump had lunch at the Grand Commoner, a coffee belonging to an American Arab businessman, a few days before the elections.
“Many people (in Dearborn) have secretly voted for him,” said Zahr. “They are the ones who have been silent now.” Zahr voted for Stein.
But some double their support, not inclined to take Trump’s words to their nominal value. Bishara Bahbah, born and raised to Palestinians and raised in Jerusalem, has largely campaigned in Michigan and other swing states through the group formerly called Arabs-Americans for Trump. (The group changed its name last week in American Arabs for peace.) He says that Trump’s comments were just a “water test”.
“I think the president threw this idea as a test ball. There can never be any displacement of the Palestinians of their homeland. It’s counterproductive, ”he says.
While family members were forced to flee Jerusalem during the Nakba in 1948, and he has since been forbidden to live in the city of his birth, Bahbah continues to believe that peace in the Middle East is the ‘Trump’s main objective.
“I know that the president wants a heritage of peace and wants to be known as a peacemaker. For him, the only path is a two -state solution he told me that he would support. »»
He says he faced a reaction to support Trump who included “messages on X which could be interpreted as death threats”, but that Trump’s advisers told him that Trump did not want to suggest that Palestinians in Gaza are withdrawn from their strength from their homes and earth.
“I believe that the president will come to the conclusion that what he said publicly is simply not feasible,” he said. He says that the brand’s brand change to the American Arabs for peace, announced hours after Trump’s comments, has been in preparation for months.
For Jadallah, Trump’s alleged plans for Israel to hand over the Gaza Strip to the United States are an obvious contradiction with what he campaigned for the president.
“It really shows its intention to serve a foreign government before the American people, right?” she said.
“Because if he wants a first program in America, he would explain how we can spend our hard taxes to improve our health systems and our schools.”
She says that the resilience that the Palestinians of Gaza showed after 15 months of bombing and continuous displacement led her to believe that it is very unlikely that Trump’s plan to withdraw people from Gaza would succeed.
“They endured the genocide, hunger, were moved several times from north to south,” she said.
“There are still 2 million people residing in Gaza and they told us that they did not want to leave because they are the legitimate owners of the country.”
