TThe CIA is on a recruitment campaign for foreign spies. In the space of Chinese officials and workers, which the American intelligence agency hopes to turn against Beijing via newly published brilliant videos.
The two videos tackle probable anxieties among some inside the Communist Party machine – being stuck in humble work helping an increasingly rich official, or being a victim of the endless purges who targeted millions of party members at all levels since Xi Jinping came to power.
“While I get up within the party, I look at those above me being thrown like worn shoes, but now I realize that my fate was just as precarious as theirs,” said a narrator in a video, adding that he must protect his family whose fate is linked to his.
In another, the narrator declares: “The failure of our leaders to keep the repeated promises of prosperity has become a well -known secret … It is time that I start to work towards my own dreams.”
The two Chinese language videos published Thursday while the commercial hostilities between the two superpowers continue to spir. Accessible on YouTube, they are titled in Chinese: “Why I contacted the CIA: to take control of my fate” and “why I contacted the CIA: for a better life”.
“Do you have information on economic, tax or commercial policies?” ” The CIA asks in legend.
“Do you work in the defense industry?” Do you work in national security, diplomacy, science, advanced technologies or deal with people who work in these areas? Please contact us. The information you can provide is important and we appreciate your ideas on these subjects. ”
The videos end with encrypted contact details for the agency.
The campaign follows previous efforts that started in October, with online instructions for potential assets in China, Iran and North Korea to contact the CIA. The agency said it had already managed to enlist the Russians.
“If it didn’t work, we would not make more videos,” CIA official said to Reuters, who said those responsible were convinced that the videos exceeded strict Internet controls in China.
In recent weeks, Russian military recruitment videos have spread on Chinese social media, looking for mercenaries to fight in his war against Ukraine, but it is not clear if the Chinese authorities have allowed these videos to spread or simply could not stop them.
The CIA focuses particularly on the reconstruction of a spy network inside China. A few years before Xi came to power in 2012, the Chinese State Ministry of State has dismantled an American espionage ring, imprisoning and performing at least a dozen CIA assets.
In return, China has strengthened anti-spying laws and encouraged citizens to carefully monitor and report the suspicious activities of those around them.
The United States now considers China as its most serious soldiers and cyber-men.
“It is the intention to dominate the world economically, militarily and technological,” said CIA director John Ratcliffe in a statement. “Our agency must continue to respond to this threat urgently, creativity and grain, and these videos are only one of the ways we do this.”
