Former Newcastle Knights star Jarrod Mullen spoke of his battle against a drug addiction who almost killed him, while he is preparing to bring Bombshell in Rugby League.

Formerly a prodigious talent and the apparent heir to the Immortal Footal Andrew Johns, Mullen’s career took a massive turn in 2017 when it was tested positive for steroids, which led to a four -year suspension.

Mullen’s life quickly became out of control, the football star becoming a drug addict and a drug trafficker who was sniffing “three grams in half a day” to cope with the end of his career.

By reflecting at its lowest point, Mullen spoke of drug overdose in 2018 which almost claimed his life.

“ Maman (Leeann) and Papa (Steve) sent me a text to say that they came to see me to give me lunch on Sunday ”, he told News Corp.

“So I had to try to lower the heart rate because I was too wired, so I took xanax and oxycontin to calm down. I went home and all I remember is to put the TV, then wake up in the ambulance with mom next to me.

Mullen, a former half-back, played 211 games for Newcastle Knights after making his debut in adolescence. He represented NSW in the original state in 2007

“When mom and dad came home and I was growing, gray and pretty much my last breaths, then they called the ambulance just in time.

“Apparently, if mom and dad had arrived 20 minutes later, I was almost left. It was a tight call.

“As I said, I took my last breaths. Mom and dad came to pick me up and dragged me outside and waited for the ambulance.

“They obviously still have mental scars of all this, seeing their son almost die. They didn’t know how much I used.

Since this overdose, the former half-back of the blues has worked tirelessly to rebuild his life and has not touched drugs since.

“I was in the hospital (after overdose), then I went to a detoxification treatment for 30 days in Sydney. I stopped then and I did not return. I don’t miss it at all, “he said.

However, it is still angry to be betrayed by a companion on the result of the 2017 drug screening test which ruined his first year career.

“There was someone outside the club that the boys knew who made me F *** at the time,” he said.

“We were friends and he did not support me. It was the lowest point because everyone always thinks they’ve done the bad thing.

“What was put in my system remains there for six months. We were tested every two to three weeks, so why would I go out and do something that would endanger my career when it stays in your system for six months?

Mullen now manages his own coaching business and has managed to get in great shape.

This weekend, he will return to football with group three, the Breakers de Port City – which will face the Rival Les Sharks de Port Macquarie club.

“It’s a local derby, a resentment match,” said Mullen.

“I play for Port City because I have family in the regions of Taree, Wingham and Krambach. It is a little calmer here rather than Newcastle occupied.

“After what happened to me in Newcastle, there are a few demons there and, to be honest, I needed a change. I train every day by doing gym work, it’s no more mental things.

“I really worked hard on my body and it is probably the best shape in which I have been since I stopped playing.
