Football legend Francesco Totti recently toasted Bondi after visiting the iconic Sydney restaurant named after him – and he believes Australia should host a men’s World Cup sooner rather than later.

Totti – who represented AS Roma throughout his senior career before retiring in 2017 – was joined by his glamorous girlfriend Noemi Bocchi on the country’s most famous beach.

After successfully co-hosting the Women’s World Cup with New Zealand last year, Totti is confident a men’s tournament would be a huge success in the Netherlands.

“I see a lot of potential in Australia, which is also hosting a men’s World Cup,” he told News Corp.

“You have the right mentality, people love football, the number of fans and the stadiums.

“The Women’s World Cup was an appetizer… and it would be really nice to have a Men’s World Cup as well.”

Totti, 47, added that a potential stumbling block with FIFA could be “too many round stadiums”. But he is adamant: “Australia has the potential to do great things in football if it is organized correctly.”

He was flown down by Racing City Group Australasia for a number of conferences.

The attacking midfielder made his Serie A debut in 1993 – and despite numerous offers elsewhere during his decorated career, Totti remained loyal to the Yellow and Red.

Totti is widely regarded as the club’s greatest player, scoring 250 goals in 619 appearances.

His highlight was winning a Serie A title in 2001 – before also being crowned Italian Footballer of the Year five times.
