Football ‘fan’ who performed Nazi salute during A-League match learns of his fate – and police could soon be knocking on his door

  • NSW laws passed in 2022 made saluting illegal

A prominent Western Sydney Wanderers supporter who was filmed performing a Nazi salute during an A-League Men’s match has received a two-year suspension from Football Australia.

Coverage broadcast by Network Ten showed a vision of the fan making the gesture at the end of last month’s Sydney derby at Allianz Stadium.

In the footage, the man can be seen raising his middle finger towards the camera before quickly giving the apparent salute.

New laws introduced in 2022 make the act illegal in New South Wales, with a maximum prison sentence of 12 months.

NSW Police said on Monday they were investigating the incident and had yet to make any arrests, but the FA handed the fan a two-year ban.

“As the governing body of football in Australia, we take a strong stance against any form of racist and/or anti-social behavior,” the governing body said in a statement.

“This individual’s actions not only breached the A-League’s entry requirements and our Spectator Code of Behavior, but fundamentally contradicted the values of respect and inclusiveness upheld by Football Australia.

“In response, Football Australia has imposed a two-year ban on this spectator, effective immediately.

“This ban encompasses all matches sanctioned by Football Australia, including national team matches, Australian Cup matches, A-Leagues matches, domestic second-tier matches and National Premier matches League.

“We are committed to ensuring football remains a sport that unites communities and provides a safe and respectful environment for all.”

The FA has banned the use of the Nazi salute for life following the 2022 Australian Cup final between Sydney United 58 and Macarthur.

Three Sydney United fans appeared in court last month charged with committing the act, each pleading not guilty.
