Following the debacle of Sony’s Helldivers, Ghost of Tsushima’s PSN requirement also gets it removed from Steam in over 170 countries.
The Helldivers 2 PSN debacle may be over, but a similar requirement is restricting access to the PC port of Ghost of Tsushima in over 170 territories.
Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut is set to launch on PC next week on May 16, although the open-world samurai game has been removed from Steam in nearly 180 countries around the world due to the game’s online co-op mode requires players to log into an active account. PlayStation Network account, which is impossible in many countries due to lack of access to PSN.
SteamDB shows that “countries with purchase restrictions” were added to Ghost of Tsushima’s listings earlier this week, with many affected players reporting that Steam automatically refunded their purchase of the game.
Developer Sucker Punch previously attempted to clarify its account linking plans, explaining that a “PSN account is required for Legends online multiplayer and to use the PlayStation overlay.” However, no PSN account linking is required to access the single-player portion of the game, as is the case with other PC ports released by PlayStation.
When Helldivers 2 announced that a PSN account would be mandatory months after launch, enraged gamers protested with over 200,000 negative reviews on the game’s showcase page. The complaints stemmed from data collection concerns, a unclear “grace period” and the fact that the game had been removed from over 170 countries where it was previously available. Sony eventually backed down and dropped the mandate.
The publisher seems to be doing a better job communicating Ghost of Tsushima’s requirements, but excluding global players to increase the number of PSN accounts still isn’t ideal. Sony’s PC efforts could continue with an “imminent” port announcement of God of War: Ragnarok, so we’ll see what the future looks like for their cross-platform push.
Helldivers 2 has just been removed from Steam in three more countries without access to PSN.
