Ahead of the Bihar assembly elections, famous folk singer Maithili Thakur expressed her desire to make her political debut from her hometown Benipatti in Madhubani district. The 25-year-old singer said Tuesday that although no official announcement has been made, she feels a special connection to her village and would like to begin her political career there.

Speaking to reporters, she said: “I would like to run in my home constituency… my village, if I am given a ballot. I have a special connection with this place.”

Thakur, who was here to perform at the Narmada Mahotsav, also spoke about his preferred assembly constituency. She said: “There has been no official announcement yet, but I would like to visit my village area because I have a special connection with it.

“Leaving there will also give me a chance to learn. Meeting people, talking to them… I will understand better if I leave my village,” said the singer.

Replying to another question on the Bihar assembly elections, Thakur said she was ready to contribute in every possible way for the progress of the country.

Recently, she met BJP national general secretary and Bihar organizing in-charge Vinod Tawde and Union minister Nityanand Rai, sparking speculation that she might contest the upcoming polls.

On Sunday, Tawde also shared photos on X of their meeting, claiming that the singer and her family left Bihar in 1995 during Lalu Prasad Yadav’s tenure. He added that the “girl” now wants to return after witnessing the progress of the state.

“Today, Union Minister of State for Home @nityanandraibjp ji and I urged her that for the people of Bihar and for the development of Bihar, her contribution is expected by the common man of Bihar and meets their expectations. Best wishes to the daughter of Bihar, Maithili Thakur ji! ” he wrote.

Thakur, born in Benipatti in Madhubani district of Bihar to a maithili musician father, made a name for herself in music at the age of 11 in 2011 and has been active ever since.

Vinod Narayan Jha, BJP leader and former minister, currently represents Benipatti in the Bihar Assembly.

In 2020, the 68-year-old BJP leader defeated Congress candidate Bhavana Jha by over 30,000 votes in this Brahmin-dominated seat.

The Bihar assembly elections will be held in two phases on November 6 and 11, and votes will be counted on November 14.
