Todd Phillips wished the Internet a Merry Christmas with new images from Joker: Folie à Deux with Joaquin Phoenix reprising his Oscar-winning role and Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn.
“Wishing everyone a happy holiday and a wonderful new year. October 2024 #Joker2,” the director wrote on Instagram alongside two new photos.
The first photo in the grid shows Arthur Fleck of Phoenix through what appears to be a cell window with the number “E258” above it. The next photo reveals Gaga as a plainclothes Harley looking sweetly at Phoenix now in her signature Joker makeup and costume.
Not much is known about the sequel to Phillips’ hit 2019 film Joker, which grossed more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office and earned 11 Academy Award nominations, winning Best Actor for Phoenix and Best Original Score for composer Hildur Guðnadóttir. The next film would be a musical that follows the Joker and Harley as they forge a complicated romance in Arkham Asylum with its subtitle “Folie à Deux” referring to a “shared psychosis” that many believe it will exist between Harley and the Joker. .
Guðnadóttir, who is also the composer of the suite, said Variety that she thinks that the musical journey makes perfect sense for the story.
“It’s an interesting decision,” Guðnadóttir said. “It’s both logical and also very surprising to me as well as the audience. It’s been a really great conversation so far, and I’m really looking forward to seeing how it plays out.”
Star Zazie Beetz expressed similar sentiments, saying in June: “I think people will be surprised. I don’t think it will be what they expect, the fact that it’s musical.”
She added: “We all express ourselves in some way musically and dance in our everyday lives. I think it will work very well.
Joker: Folie à deux hits theaters on October 24, 2024.
