Florida Sen. Rick Scott says his Naples home was ‘crushed’ during dinner

The home of Senator Rick Scott (R-Florida) was destroyed Wednesday evening in an incident he described as a “sick attempt to terrorize my family.”

Police received a call around 9 p.m. from someone reporting a shooting at Scott’s home in Naples. In less than 15 minutes, officers realized the caller’s claims were a hoax, Naples police said in a statement. Scott and his wife were eating dinner at the time of the incident and no one else was inside the home, said Bryan McGinn, a Naples police spokesman.

Scott tweeted that the “cowards” who destroyed his house had “wasted time.” [and] resources of our law enforcement agencies.

Naples police are investigating the incident and have not yet identified a suspect or motive, McGinn said. A spokesperson for Scott said no further details were immediately available.

The attempt is part of a series of crushing episodes against politicians in recent days, including in Ohio, Georgia and New York. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) said she was run over on Christmas Day, while her family was home celebrating the holiday.

Wednesday evening, Naples police received a non-emergency call from a person saying he had “shot his wife with an AR-15 three times while she was sleeping,” according to the incident report. The caller also told the dispatcher he was holding a hostage and demanded $10,000, saying he would “blow up the house” with a pipe bomb if he was not given the money, the report states.

Police said the caller, who said his name was Jamal, did not provide additional identifying information. The caller’s voice also “sounded as if it were computer-generated/artificial,” according to the department’s statement.
