Flight left unmanned for 10 minutes after the officer’s collapse

A flight from Lufthansa lasted 10 minutes unmanned after the first officer fell ill while he was alone in the cockpit, the investigators said.

The Airbus A321 stole from Frankfurt, Germany, Seville, Spain, last February.

The details of the incident were revealed on Thursday when Spanish investigators published their final report.

More than 200 people were on board the flight, which seemed to be smooth before crossing the Spanish border.

With about half an hour of the trip, the captain left the cockpit to visit the bathroom. He told investigators that the first officer seemed to be in good condition for the moment.

However, when the captain returned eight minutes later, he could not return to the cockpit.

In an interview with the investigators, the first officer said he had suddenly lost consciousness.

The captain tried to enter the security door access code five times. Meanwhile, a on -board agent tried to contact the first officer of the intercom.

After receiving any response, the captain used the emergency access code. Before the expiration of the timer, the first officer was able to recover enough to open the door.

The 38 -year -old man was described as “pale, sweating and strangely moving”, then the captain called for help.

Cab Crew and a doctor, who was traveling as a passenger, administered first aid, while the captain turned to Madrid – the nearest airport.

At landing, the first officer was taken to the hospital.

His “sudden and severe inability” is the result of a crisis disorder caused by a neurological condition, investigators wrote in Thursday’s report.

The Spanish aviation regulator said that its condition was difficult to detect – and will only appear in a medical examination if its symptoms had been present at the time when there were previously.

Investigators recommended that the European Union Aviation Agency informs all the airlines of this incident, so that they can reassess the risks of a driver left alone on the cockpit.

Lufthansa did not immediately respond to a request for comments.
