EAST BOSTON (CBS) — Airline employees were found renting an illegal apartment in East Boston. Boston Inspection Services say 12 people, all flight attendants, lived at the Geneva Street property during their layovers.
“From what I understand, they’ve been operating there for about 10 years, so they went unnoticed for quite a while,” said Flavio Daveiga of Boston Inspectional Services. “They just use it as a resting point, as a refreshment, and then continue their journeys or journey to their home base.”

The building was a garage converted into an apartment. After receiving a complaint on Tuesday, investigators discovered several violations inside, including illegal construction, missing smoke detectors and hazardous materials.
It is believed that the people who stayed there paid $300 per month. The inspection services say it was actually a tenant living in the apartment who called to report the problems inside.
The property has been deemed unfit, so anyone staying there has been asked to leave. The owner will now have to file permits with the city to make it a habitable space before anyone is allowed to return.
