Flash floods sweep through Pittsburgh area, prompting numerous water rescues

PITTSBURG — Flash flooding caused by heavy, unrelenting rains that inundated western Pennsylvania prompted numerous rescues and evacuations in the area, but no injuries were reported.

The National Weather Service said more than 4 inches of rain fell in a short time Thursday afternoon and evening in parts of Allegheny County. Rescue teams in Oakdale, a Pittsburgh suburb, used boats to evacuate or rescue some residents, while authorities in nearby Etna issued an emergency evacuation notice as Pine Creek crossed its banks at more than 4.3 meters.

Parts of New England were also bracing for possible flooding as more rain was expected Friday, although the system was expected to leave the region by early afternoon. Strong winds were also possible across the region.

Meanwhile, thousands of residents in southeastern New York state remained without power Friday after severe storms passed through the region Thursday evening.
