President-elect Donald Trump’s first day in office is sure to be a busy one.
Trump plans to sign more than 50 executive orders on Monday — and possibly more than 100 — on the first day of his second presidency, according to a person involved in his transition operation.
On the first day of his previous term, Trump signed only one executive order targeting the Affordable Care Act. Trump’s first wave of executive orders, some of which could be rolled out later this week, are expected to include a mix of campaign promises, reversals from outgoing President Joe Biden’s policies and a restructuring of federal staff.
Questions remain, however, about how many of Trump’s list of goals he can achieve on his first day.
Additionally, some policies will require Congressional approval. Here are some policy areas in which the president-elect made promises for his first day in office:
Immigration, an area Trump has focused heavily on during his rallies, will likely be the center of attention from day one. He promised his supporters that he would launch a mass deportation effort and close the southern border.
“On day one, I will launch the largest deportation program in American history to get criminals out. I will save every city that has been invaded and conquered, and we will put these vicious, bloodthirsty criminals in prison, and then we’ll expel them from our country as quickly as possible,” Trump said at a rally at Madison Square Garden in October.
Trump has ignored concerns about the cost of large-scale deportation plans. His new border czar, Tom Homan, said Chicago would be “ground zero” of plans from day one.
In 2023, Trump declared on his first day back in the White House that he would end “any open border policies of the Biden administration.”
“I will also use Title 42 to end the child trafficking crisis by returning all trafficked children to their families and countries of origin. We will do so immediately,” Trump said in October 2023.
The new president also said he would end birthright citizenship, which is automatic citizenship for anyone born in the United States. He reiterated that during an interview with NBC’s Kristen Welker during “Meet the Press” in December.
“You promised to end birthright on day one,” Welker said.
“That’s correct,” Trump said.
“Is this still your plan?” » asked Welker.
“Yeah. Absolutely,” Trump said.
Most of the promises Trump made on day one have to do with the other core issue of his campaign, the economy.
“On January 20, as one of my many first executive orders, I will sign all necessary documents to impose 25% tariffs on ALL products entering the United States on Mexico and Canada, as well as its ridiculous open borders,” the president-elect wrote. in a post on his social media platform Truth Social in November.
Trump has pledged to impose a 25 percent tariff on everything imported from Mexico and Canada and add a 10 percent tariff to the duties already imposed on goods from China.
The president-elect made several references to reversing climate policies and increasing oil and gas production. He pledged on Jan. 20 to reverse what he calls the Biden administration’s “electric vehicle mandate” and increase U.S. auto production.
“I will end the electric vehicle mandate on day one. This will save the American auto industry from complete annihilation, which is happening right now, and save American customers thousands and thousands of dollars by car,” Trump said at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. Wisconsin, in July.
Much of his first day plans involve approving more drilling and pipelines. “Drill, baby, drill” was a constant refrain from Trump on the campaign trail.
“We will – from day one, we will drill, drill, drill. Drill, baby, drill,” Trump said in January 2024.
Other executive orders could roll back environmental protections and halt wind projects. It has a one-year goal of reducing energy prices by 50 percent.
During Welker’s interview in December, Trump again promised to pardon his supporters who attacked the U.S. Capitol four years ago. More than 1,500 people have been charged in this attack.
“These people have suffered long and hard. And there may be some exceptions. I have to look for… you know, if someone was radical, crazy,” Trump said.
The new president has the power to pardon anyone found guilty in federal court. He can also ask the attorney general to step aside so that prosecutions do not continue.
Trump has promised to end reimbursements for service members who have abortions. The president-elect also said he would limit gender-affirming health care to transgender service members.
“On day one, I will repeal Joe Biden’s cruel policies on ridiculous so-called ‘gender-affirming care’, a process that involves giving children puberty blockers, altering their physical appearance and , finally, to operate on minor children. Can you believe this? ? I will sign a new executive order directing every federal agency to cease all programs that promote the concept of sexual and gender transition at any age. I will then ask Congress to permanently prevent federal taxpayer dollars from being used to promote or finance these procedures. , and pass a law banning child sexual mutilation in all 50 states,” Trump said in a video posted on his campaign website in February 2023.
Another priority on Trump’s inauguration day is removing protections for transgender students. Action by the Biden administration had protected transgender students from discrimination in schools.
Trump said he would sign an executive order to cut federal funding for schools with a vaccination mandate and schools that advocate critical race theory and other “inappropriate racial, sexual or political content.” This is an example of a campaign promise that would likely require congressional approval.
“I will not give a dime to a school that has a vaccination mandate or a mask mandate. And I will do something that I think is amazing and I even have to mention it. I will keep men out of sports 100 percent female from day one,” then-candidate Trump said at a rally in West Palm Beach, Florida, in October 2023.
“They are dying, the Russians and the Ukrainians. I want them to stop dying. And I will – I will do it in 24 hours,” Trump said in New Hampshire in May 2023.
Trump has said he can end the war in a day, although Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has pushed back that timetable.
The president-elect has close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin and has criticized Biden for giving money to Ukraine.
