Fiorentina suffered Europa Conference League heartbreak last season, but are now back for more.
The Viol qualified for the final in Prague 12 months ago, only to lose to West Ham United in the worst possible circumstances. With 90 minutes on the clock, Jarrod Bowen scored to make it 2-1 to the Hammers and send the trophy back to east London.
Fiorentina even has the chance to be involved in a continental competition this time around. They did not qualify via league position in 2022/23, but Juventus’ suspension from Europe allowed Vincenzo Italiano’s side to take Italy’s last vacant spot.
They made the most of it. Fiorentina beat Rapid Vienna in the play-offs, then topped their group without defeat. A 5-4 aggregate victory over Maccabi Haifa followed in the round of 16, before Fiorentina beat Viktoria Plzen 2-0 over two legs in the quarter-finals.
They had to work hard for this last victory. The first and second matches against Viktoria ended 0-0 after 90 minutes. Ultimately, Fiorentina scored twice in extra time to book their place in the last four.
Bookmakers believe an Aston Villa vs Fiorentina final is on the cards, but Olympiacos and Club Brugge will have something to say about that.
The Belgian team started in the second qualifying round, which meant they had to play six matches before the group stage. Bruges’ European campaign began in July.
They took 16 points from a possible 18 in a dominant performance in Group D, before eliminating Molde and PAOK.
Serie A is a stronger division than the Belgian Pro League, but that doesn’t necessarily mean Fiorentina will have it their way in this showdown.
Both teams can still qualify and Italiano will ensure his players show no signs of complacency ahead of Thursday night’s first leg.

Fiorentina and Club Brugge will both look to establish a first-leg lead when they clash on Thursday.

Fiorentina’s domestic season was canceled by inconsistency. For example, they recently went through a period where they won just two of 13 Serie A matches.
This poor form saw the Alto moving from fourth place to 10th, although back-to-back wins over Salernitana and Sassuolo have since seen them move up one place in the standings.
These victories will have given confidence to the Italiano players before the visit of Club Brugge.

Goals were rare in the quarter-final first leg between Fiorentina and Club Brugge. The former drew 0-0 against Viktoria Plzen, while the latter secured a 1-0 victory against PAOK.
This week’s fight between the two men could follow suit. Neither manager will be enthusiastic about chasing a win that night. We should expect Fiorentina and Brugge to deliver measured performances in Tuscany.
This doesn’t necessarily mean it will be a boring match. Still, it’s worth noting that six of Fiorentina’s last 10 matches in Serie A this season have yielded fewer than 2.5 goals, as have both matches in Club Brugge’s aforementioned quarter-final against PAOK.
It’s true that Fiorentina showed style in a 5-1 win over Sassuolo at the weekend, but the circumstances on this occasion were very different.
