Finland announced on Tuesday that it would withdraw from a world treaty of terrestrial mines – a decision taken “as the fears of Russia grow,” reports Politico. Politico reports that the 1997 Ottawa Convention “underwent increasing pressure due to the Kremlin war against Ukraine, especially in neighboring countries of Russia”. Finland counts in this group: it shares a border of 830 miles with Russia – the longest in all NATO countries, by defense – and the exit of the treaty would allow it to use terrestrial mines along this border.
