A long range effort from Matt O’Riley was followed by Lundstram who volleyed the ball into his own net following a pullback from Daizen Maeda to make it 2-0.

But Rangers then got one back through Cyriel Dessers – only for Rangers’ comeback attempt to collapse almost instantly.

With the ball loose and the energy increased in Celtic Park, Lundstram slid in hard to collect the ball past Mikey Johnston.

Referee Willie Collum initially gave the former Sheffield United player a yellow card, but VAR intervened.

Slow-motion footage showed Lundstram connecting with Johnston’s ankle, leading to the booking being turned into a red card.

One fan tweeted: “John Lundstram, this tackle is truly despicable. »

And another message: “What a shocking challenge from Lundstram! »
