Final Fantasy creator not interested in new version of franchise

Final Fantasy Creator Hironobu Sakaguchi confirmed in a recent interview with Bloomberg (thanks, VGC) that he has no interest in revisiting the franchise.

Granted, given that he left Square Enix in 2003 to create Mistwalker, this shouldn’t necessarily come as a surprise, but what’s interesting is the reasoning behind his decision. According to Sakaguchi, he loaded up Final Fantasy XIV in 2021 with the intention of spending a few hours on the game before attending an event.

A few hours turned into a full-blown obsession, with Sakaguchi admitting, “Now I almost live in Final Fantasy XIV.” He expressed concern that revisiting the franchise professionally might impact his enjoyment of the game, citing his shift from creator to consumer.

“If I take the Final Fantasy brand again, I don’t know if I will really be able to enjoy it Final Fantasy XIV as much.”

Additionally, Sakaguchi reiterated that he has no interest in working on porting older Mistwalker games, such as Blue Dragon or Lost Odyssey, to modern platforms. He confirmed that he and his team are working on something entirely new, but wouldn’t say what that is. The best guesses at the moment point to a direct sequel to Fantasian, as the company recently filed a trademark for “Fantasian Dark Edge.”
