Square Enix announced earlier this week that it would aggressively pursue a more multi-format-focused strategy, after its big PS5 console exclusives failed to meet expectations. According to Bloomberg reporter Takashi Mochizuki, sales of Final Fantasy 16 started in line with the company’s goals, but its momentum has since slowed and failed to meet its later goals. A PC port is imminent and the publisher hopes this will get the title back on track.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth also failed to live up to expectations, although it’s unclear what its current sales numbers are or how far it is from Square Enix’s goals. And then there’s Foamstars, a title that was always likely to struggle, but which apparently also missed the publisher’s goals. This one kicked off the first day with PS Plusand always receives further updates.

It’s worth noting that none of the games necessarily failed, they just didn’t live up to expectations. It seems that Square Enix’s response to this will be to release its titles on more platforms in the future, although it will be interesting to see what kind of impact this strategy will have; Naturally, it will reach more consumers by launching simultaneously on PlayStation, Nintendo, Xbox and PC – but it’s probably fair to say that its targets will. Also increase in the process.
