Fields Tabbed Jets’ QB1 – “We believe in Justin,” says GM

Palm Beach, Florida-The Director General of New York Jets, Darren Mougey, has left no doubt about the Post-Aaron Rodgers of the organization, declaring on Sunday that Justin Fields is their new QB1.

“We believe that Justin is the starter,” Mougey told journalists at the annual League meeting. “We believe in Justin. We think we can win with Justin, so we are delighted with Justin.”

In a sense, Mougey put his mouth where his money is.

The jets gave Fields a guarantee of $ 30 million as part of its $ 40 million contract over two years in free agency – starter money – but there was no public ones by team officials until Sunday.

Not only did Mougey confirmed the starting status of Fields, but he went further, saying that the organization thinks that Fields can reproduce the career trajectory of Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield – old first -round disappointments that prospered in their fourth team.

“We have seen part of this lately and he has (playing a factor) during the process, and we think we could have the same thing,” said Mougey about Fields.

It will be the third Fields stop. He was drafted 11th in the general classification in 2021 by the Chicago Bears, who treated him at the Pittsburgh Steelers after three disappointing seasons – a record of 10-28, 40 passes of touch and 30 interceptions.

Pushed into the alignment while Russell Wilson recovered from a pre-season calf injury, Fields helped the Steelers at a start of 4-2. It was effective, if not prolific. He did on average only 184 yards by the pass by departure, and succeeded five passes of touch, but he launched only one interception and posted a completion rate of 65.8% in career.

But he was back on the bench as soon as Wilson was healthy. The jets saw the promise of the six games of Fields, confident that he could continue to improve as a smuggler.

“You saw it last year,” said Mougey. “He had 4-2 as a starter and probably had some of the best quarter games in his career. We are going to do everything to support him when he arrives here.”

The capacity of the fields as a double threat intrigued the jets. In four seasons, he rushed to 2,509 yards. Mougey called it “a set of unique sporting skills that adds another dimension to the game difficult to defend.”

Hope Fields jets can be their long -term response to this position, but they can rotate next year if it does not work.

They released Rodgers, 41, after two seasons and targeted fields in the free agency. In addition to Fields, the jets have the return of Tyrod Taylor, 35, who “will be right on the heels (Fields)”, according to Mougey. The next depth table is the choice of fifth round in 2024, Jordan Travis and the former player of the training squad Adrian Martinez. The addition of fields will not prevent them from writing a quarter-back, although Mougey refused to speculate.

After the project, Mougey said he would entertain potential contract extensions. Jets have several players looking for extensions, including the Gardner corner sauce and the Garrett Wilson wide receiver.

“Once we have succeeded in the project,” he said, “we will talk about the potential extensions to anyone.”

Contractual interviews are underway with the wide receiver Allen Lazard, which should make a base salary of $ 11 million no. Jets trying to make him spend a significant salary reduction. In March, Lazard was authorized to speak to other teams in a trade.
