Fernando Alonso ends speculation over move to replace Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes by signing new Aston Martin deal

Alonso has now signed a multi-year contract until 2026, a surprising move considering he is now 42 years old.

Alonso is a legendary figure in F1 and was heavily linked with a decision to join Mercedes for the 2025 season.

Toto Wolff’s team is looking for an experienced driver to join the team following Lewis Hamilton’s decision to join Ferrari from next season.

However, Hamilton’s replacement will not be Alonso, with the Spaniard expected to stay at Aston Martin.

Alonso was also linked with a move to Red Bull amid uncertainty over Max Verstappen’s future in light of the Christian Horner sexting scandal.

Alonso is attracting admiring glances as the 42-year-old sits eighth in the drivers’ championship, performing well above expectations at Aston Martin after securing a 6th place finish at last weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix.

Asked if Aston Martin’s struggles might prompt him to talk to Toto Wolff about a move to Mercedes, Alonso replied: “It’s a very good question but Mercedes are behind us so it doesn’t matter. doesn’t seem so attractive (either).”
