Fernando Alonso aims brutal dig at Mercedes amid rumours of move to replace Lewis Hamilton

Hamilton, of course, is joining Ferrari for the 2025 season and that means Toto Wolff is looking for an experienced manager to work alongside George Russell in Mercedes’ return to the top of the table.

Alonso is attracting admiring glances as the 42-year-old sits eighth in the drivers’ championship, performing well above expectations at Aston Martin after securing a 6th place finish at this weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix.

With a contract expiring at the end of the season, Alonso was asked by Sky Sports about his chances of staying put next season.

“I had a lot of fun, which is great,” he said.

“I had one of my best weekends, I think, (in terms of) driving, and I’m still 44 seconds behind the leader.

“That doesn’t look appealing. Let’s see.”

Asked if Aston Martin’s struggles might prompt him to talk to Toto Wolff about a move to Mercedes, Alonso replied: “It’s a very good question but Mercedes are behind us so it doesn’t matter. doesn’t seem so attractive (either).”

Of his outing in Japan, Alonso added: “It was one of my best races, or my best weekends. It was complete, very strong, very solid.”

“From testing to the race, it was maybe the best of last year, or maybe even one of the top five of my career.
