Feds say one suspect dead, another in custody in fatal shooting of U.S. Border Patrol agent in Vermont – Boston 25 News

COVENTRY, Vt. — One suspect is dead and another is in custody after a U.S. Border Patrol agent was shot Monday afternoon while on duty in northern Vermont, federal authorities confirmed.

The shooting happened at 3:15 p.m. Monday on Interstate 91 in Coventry, Vermont, near the U.S.-Canada border, according to Vermont State Police.

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesperson said a Swanton Sector Border Patrol agent, who was not identified, was shot and killed in the line of duty.

In a statement, FBI Albany says one suspect was killed and another injured and is currently in custody. The names of the deceased and the person detained were not immediately available.

According to a Fox News report, the shooting happened during a traffic stop, where two suspects were in a car. Authorities confirmed to the news agency that one of the suspects was dead.

Federal authorities, including the FBI, are investigating the shooting, state police said.

I-91 remained closed in both directions between Exit 27 in Newport and Exit 26 in Orleans after the shooting, state police said Monday afternoon.

“Drivers should take alternate routes,” state police advised.

The northbound lane of I-91 has reopened near mile marker 168, state police said Monday afternoon.

“The southbound lane remains closed and is expected to be closed for an extended period of time,” state police said.

The FBI says there is no threat to the public.
