Fauci expects most states to reach the omicron peak by February. Almost half have already done so.

Covid case surges have started to decline.

On Sunday, the number of omicron cases peaked and is trending lower in 24 states and territories, as well as Washington DC, according to an NBC News analysis of the number of Covid cases tallied by state health departments and counties.

The number of cases nationwide fell to 706,000 average cases per day from a peak of 825,000 on January 15. Five days later, average hospitalizations peaked at nearly 160,000, according to an NBC News analysis of data from the Department of Health and Human Services. Experts say hospitalization trends lag case trends by a few days.
