‘It was horrible’: Father of Florence shooting victim speaks out after tragedy at his son’s birthday party

A shooting at a birthday party in Florence has left four people dead and three others injured. The shooter also died after police say he turned the gun on himself. Now, a father is speaking out for the first time after the mother of his children was killed and his teenage daughter was rushed to the hospital. Three victims are being treated at UC Medical Center. Among them is 19-year-old Chloe Parrett. Her father, Bruce Parrett, says she was shot in the chest and that without her mother’s courage, she would not have survived. “The only reason she died is when she heard Chloe scream ‘get hit,’ she went down to protect her,” Parrett said. “Her daughter had to watch her die in front of her as she tried to fight for her life.” » On the night of his son Brendon’s 21st birthday, Parrett woke up to a frightening call. His son told him that several people had been shot, including his sister Chloe and their mother Melissa. “He said, ‘Chloe’s been shot, Chloe’s been shot,’” Parrett recalled. He described the horrors he found when he arrived at the scene. “It was a chaotic scene. Kids running around, police everywhere, just carnage. It’s like the worst scene you could ever imagine seeing in your life,” Parrett said. Chloe and two others were rushed to the hospital with gunshot wounds. Police found four people dead at the scene. Among them were Shane Miller, 20, Hayden Rybicki, 20, Delaney Eary, 19, and Melissa, 44. Bruce Parrett said Melissa died trying to shield their daughter from bullets. “She was very lucky, very lucky. Her mom was there for her when she got her. She wouldn’t be alive if it wasn’t for her mom,” Parrett said. Melissa was hosting the party at her home on Ridgecrest Dr. Just before 3 a.m., police said Chase Garvey, 21, showed up and opened fire. He eventually fled the scene and turned the gun on himself, police said Garvey died of a self-inflicted wound. “Our family is destroyed. Our family is upside down. We’ll never be the same.
